This is my brothers new Ultra LR killer.
Just got back from shooting the rifle for the first time a bit ago.
After 2 rounds my brother mentioned he had a headache all morning, and this was killing him every shot. Well, after 5 rounds, he told me to shoot the rest of 'em his headache was just too bad.
For some perspective -
The recoil as much, or a bit more than I expected, although when he was shooting it, it looked fine. It was more than both 50 BMG's I've shot, the Grizzly and the AR50 both. Twice what the AR50 was becuase of it's very efficient brake design, but very bulky too. Recoil got worse with the hotter loads, and should be pretty noticable when the get to 2400 fps or so. It recoils about like a light 338 Ultra with hot loaded 250's and no brake! Not quite like a 375 Ultra or 378 Wby, more of a big push though. It's not like a 300 WM or Ultra...

Ruger #1 (early 80's model w/ adjustable trigger)
36" Pac-Nor barrel
Custom design brake (extended Holland Quick Discharge variant)
NF NXS 5.5-22
Farrel base (20 MOA + 6 MOA barrel taper)
Leupold QRW's
Custom made stock (shaped from 4"x12" blank)(not quite done shaping and finishing it)
Harris bipod

500 Jeffery 750gr A-Max at 4.65" OAL -

IMR4350 106-111gr 36-42k psi 1980-2180 fps

H4831SC 108-112gr 31-34k psi 1897-1989 fps

RL22 108-112gr 30-37k psi 1900-2065 fps

We shot these in 1.0gr increments, 16 rounds in all. Pressures are still way low, should end up with 2350-2450 when they get up there some more.

Here's pix of the rifle, and one of the current brake design. I say current because he's going to go build another one now that's a bit bigger and more efficient for this big boy. The extra set of slots in it over the Holland isn't quite as good as it could be. The new one will have more slots and might even be a lot longer with slots angled rearward too. Shouldn't be too hard to improve it quite a bit to at least 300 WM recoil levels.

Pix didn't show up for some reason? I posted them in the "Success That Works" topic - "OK, it's a rifle, 500 Jeffery"

They're under 250kb, that's the limit at hunt101.com.

Here's the link, they posted fine here using the same??? [img] [/img] what ever they are as I always use. On this page here when I was posting, the "IMAGE" icon was not there, the other normal icons weren't either, I think. Seems some of them are different on some pages here, and some, like the smilies and bolt type aren't working yet. Figured you been working on it and just ain't got to that part yet, priorities.

I forgot to add, I couldn't edit the first post before on this forum, this time it let me. Forgot to say that before.

Anyway, seems the hyperlink to the other page is not functioning, probably something going on affecting both, just a guess tho.

Good luck there

Brent, Roger that, I will get on that tommorow. Shooting that monster has got to be like getting beaten with an ugly stick, except it is SOOOO Beautiful!

It did turn out pretty well, better than I thought it would look. His first go at widdlin wood stocks from a blank, milling machine on a lot of it tho. He said he'd do the palm swell different if he could, blend it in gradual leaving it slightly larger in the palm and wrist area. Really, it's a very comfortable grip and stock the way it is, still, it shakes ya like a big bore.
Were going to boost up the load to 60-65k psi and see if the brake works better while we're trying to get 2400 fps out of it.

Brent,

That's a hell of a rig. Looks to me as if it's a shoulder mounted rocket launcher. Too much fire power for me.

You still snowed in up in the great north west?

Thanks for the link on this site!

Hey Jeff, Glad to see you got it too, my first mass emailing, didn't even know how it'd work!

Yeah, we been getin dumped on. -20 at my place this morning, -13 now. No dirt showing this winter..... Yet!

It is a rocket launcher, friggin pill is about as long as the case is! Hope it's accurate!

I hope it warms up, be nice to shoot it again before SPRING!
He won't go out with me, too cold he says. I got an itchy finger and I can't wait.

I been meaning to ask you about the camo coating -
You said you recomended I do some things "before" sending a rifle in to have it done. Can you tell me what they were? My buddy Eric is sending his to camo-it here soon and I told him I'd ask you about what you said again.

Thanks Jeff, I imagine you're stayin warm!!

Brent,
Isn't that what the Mountain Park Service people use to knock down avalanches?
For us uneducated in this round, could you do a side by side pic with say a 223 or 308?

I don't have one with an A-Max seated in it, and no way to seat it here, but I'll get a pic of it when he loads some up. I've got a 308 with an A-Max in it for comparison.

I'm not sure what they use for avalanche control, but they are BIG CANNONS.
