This is my opinion on fluted barrels. And I can prove it with a lap run through any fluted barrel, including rimfire. When you flute a barrel, you remove material from the O.D. which in turn increases the diameter of the I.D. or the barrel. You will never see a centerfire or rimfire benchrest gun barrel fluted because of this.

The latest record holding rimfire benchrest barrels are reverse tapered to create a choke at the muzzle end. The barrel O.D. at the breech is smaller than the barrels O.D. at the muzzle.
In other words, the more material you remove from a barrels's outside diateter, the larger the inside diameter will be.

Centerfire benchrest barrels are tight neck chambered with only .001 clearance between a loaded round neck and the chambers neck. Most centerfire BR barrels are very large in diameter from breech to muzzle so It doesn't effect the inside diameter as much with a slight taper towards the muzzle end.

Fluting is for bling and serves no purpose in accuracy. This can easilly be proven if you know how to use a lap or wish to compete with your fluted barrel in a formal benchrest match. Caliber makes no difference. Benchrest shooters go to great lengths to keep their barrels cool during a string at a match, but fluting is not one of them.

Granted I'm no gunsmith, so I'm just curious how much of this is BS. I know there's a few of you out there who've built some pretty freakin accurate rifles with flutes.

First off, the guy speaking is way off on the facts, and makes assumptions about the barrel making process that is just plain false. Second, Barney Lawton and several others have set 1,000 yard world records, or easily broken world records in practice, with barrels that are fluted......Errors include....

1) Benchrest shooters do not have neck to chamber clearances of .001.
The tightest the top shooters use is .0015, and most are now between .002 and .003, which is easily 50% to 300% more than what this guy claims.

2) The more you remove claim is not always true.
It depends on the lot of steel, how it is stress relieved, how deep the flutes are, and if the barrel is lapped before or after the fluting process. If you are going to flute, it is helpful to be smarter than the piece of steel you are working on....

3) "You will never see a centerfire or rimfire benchrest gun barrel fluted because of this."
I have won benchrest matches with fluted barrels at BRC, against the best, and taken their money more than once in the side bets with fluted barrels, not to mention set a range record in Light Varmint at .081" that stood for 3 years at BRC where Nationals are held. Somebody better talk to their optometrist, or open there eyes at a 1,000 yard Benchrest light gun relay, before talking that kind of foolish dribble.

4) "Fluting is for bling and serves no purpose in accuracy. "
Actually, talking foolish smack on the internet is for bling, it would be nice if this guy was right about something, anything.....just not so in this particular case.

BTW-----Who gives a flying @#$R%A$T#S@#A$$ about rimfire?????

Like I said, I'm no smith or bench competitor, and I'm certainly no Sam or Mike R. But I thought you may may enjoy the read!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. My sixfive drills a single hole at 100 yards, and it has a fluted barrel on it. Besides, don't the best barrels get smaller as you go from the chamber to the muzzle? Does this guy got it backwards?

Getting paid to plan the death of terrorists. I love my job!
