After being ridiculed 4 years ago for talking about spin drift and rifle torque on Sniveler'shype, I could not help but LMAO after seeing that the morons on Sniveler'shype have now made a significant discovery.... Big Grin And Nacroswnd wonders why I poke fun at them...? Big D, here is your answer.....

This link is funny stuff:

I have no reputation left to tarnish so I'll ask as it is interesting to me---how do you hit a target at 400 yards and not hit the front target at 330? I can see "spin drift" moving the bullet less than an inch and hitting the back target by a hair if you just miss the front target by a hair or the solution is the 33 inches dialed in and aiming 34 inches. Does the solution require a solid, center mass hit? Somebody explain this. Reading that thread link was painful and fruitless. What is exactly is "rifle torque" and can a muzzle break be designed to counteract it to null?

There are several ways to do it. If you are talking about a 308 shooting a 175 gr. Sierra Matchking at 2680 fps. the bullet zeroed at 400 yds., will fly by the 330 yard target about 7.5 inches higher if both targets are oriented identically on the sight line. This would allow the bullet to fly 'above' the 330 yard target and drop into the center of the chest. The ideal place to pass would be just off the neck shoulder junction of the 330 yard target.

Spin drift will help, but not as much as many of the SH 'Newfangled Spindrift Gurus' predict. For a 30 caliber bullet like a 175 SMK, there is typically less than 3/8 MOA of 'spin drift' at 400 yards depending on twist rate and velocity. All of about 1.5 inches, almost an inch of which has already occured at 330 yards. The arc spin drift creates does help the approach vector, but at those ranges, not much.

Which brings us to the wind. An almost imperceptable full value light breeze of less than two MPH will cause the above bullet to drift around 2 inches, combined with the spin drift, and you have enough of an arc to make it happen. Shoot the shot vectored south near the equator, and you improve your odds by a very small fraction of an inch if you are shooting around the left side of the 330 yard target(Coriolis effect).

The truth is there is NO MIRACLE at work here other than the Laws of Physics God designed into our Universe that are continually at work and in play 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 364 days a year.

"What is exactly is "rifle torque" and can a muzzle break be designed to counteract it to null?"

Rifle Torque is Newton's 3rd Law of Motion at work on a rifle barrel that is used to accelerate the rotational velocity of a bullet to over 200,000 RPM. A right hand twist barrel spins the bullet clockwise as it engraves and accelerates following the helix of the lands. The equal and opposite reaction to this rotational acceleration of the bullet is the barrel spinning the opposite direction (counter clockwise as we look down the barrel from the rear of the gun). It can not be countered to null easily, however, the twisting can be arrested or stopped fairly quickly because of the short lag time that it takes the gas volume to travel the length of the barrel to the brake. Anyone trying to shoot quickly off a rest, or especially off a bipod will have much faster recoil recovery time and is likely to be able to watch the trace of the bullet as it flys down range and see the impact with an effective counter torque brake.

You may have noticed when Dean was talking about rifle torque on SH recently, the Anti antitorque crowd was conspicuously silent, Where is MAArti BAdGGER and his bogus software now? Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

I don't think brakes do anything to a rifle, but they do look cool. Just kidding S-1 Big Grin

S1 you need to go back to the hide and read that one again, the guru that challenged them to the 330 to 400 year shot would not allow the shot to be over the 330 yd target. He has some vodoo that makes the bullet go around the 330 yd target and hit the 400yd target.

Yes, I will, just not this year, trolling season for morons ended with tactical, and it is now officially elk hunting season. Sounds like a good project for the doldrums of mid January!

Like any of those jokers are smart enough to bring a real spotting scope and actually

JUST WATCH THE TRACE OF THE TRAJECTORY! Big Grin
