Yes, I know the whole point of having a uber long range rifle is to use it way out there beyond no mans land. But hey, what's a fella suppose to do when you also got the will to sneak up there right under their feet and flick their light switch off with your finger.
In November a group of six friends and family went elk hunting together. 3 bulls and 3 cows were taken. I took a very large 6x6 last year at the same location but shot it with my bow. The area we hunted was thick and distant shots were not going to be possible. I almost didn't take my ARTactical 300WSM but I really wanted to see the AMax go to work on something bigger and decided at the last moment to make it my #1 choice. My #2 was going to be a modified DPMS 16" rifle in .308, I built this summer. We took 6 elk between 6 of us. Since I took a big bull last year, I was content with a nice cow to put meat in the freezer. I never did see a bull while we were up there that exceeded last year's so I was content with the cow. The shot was taken at 42 yards as she was running along side a ridge just down elevation from me. I pulled the shot a tad forward but the Amax got the job done as she only went 20 yards before piling up. Entry on the elk's left shoulder. Bullet did NOT exit right shoulder! However it did take out two ribs going in and one rib on it's way across to the off side. I tried to find some resemblance of a bullet in the shoulder but couldn't. I thought I would find atleast part of it considering the hole on the right side of the rib cage...but no luck!
