1.5 MILE Sniper Championship

This thread will be the official source for info on the first 1.5 Mile Sniper Championship. The location will be in Arizona on the terrain of Strow's choosing. Since we are all about 1 shot kills at Ultra Long Range, the course of fire will likely be 3 one shot scenarios at 1,760 yds.(1 Mile), 2200 yds. (1.25 Miles), and 2,640 yds. (1.5 MILES). In addition we may have a 3 shot short time limit event at 3 targets all at different ranges. If the terrain can be found there may be an inclination angle shot added to the mix.

Please fill out the survey or write in, as this will be a two day get together, so that competitors from different altitudes can gather appropriate data the day before the match.

If there is enough interest, we will split into two classes, Light gun, 30 cal. and smaller, less than 20 lbs. and Heavy Gun, up to 50 cal., and 50 lbs.

Question:
On the day before the competition, would you prefer:

Choices:
Class on R2 Reticle Integration
Class on Wind Reading
Day spent on Data collection
Half day data collection - half day on Wind reading
other - please write in.

What dates are you considering? Count me in if there is a 50 caliber class!

I would think that a 2-3hr class on wind reading and another 2-3hr class on reticle integration could be done the first half of the day with enough time to check come-ups the second half.

I will try to get out this weekend with the GPS and located several areas that would work. Inclination shots would be very doable. What kind on range and angle were you thinking?

If anyone else has spent some time up here in the Four Corners please chime in with ideas.

I completely understand the 1 shot-1 kill goal. However getting shooters travel this far to shoot only 3-12 shots may be a struggle.

I don't think anyone would travel for just the shots in the match. Two days to stretch the legs of their ultra long range systems, learn about the wind, and collect some valuable data for hunting season, and shoot for prizes, that may be another thing. An inclination angle over 20 degrees and 1,000 yards would be great. 7,000 plus feet of altitude would be great for the other shots if possible.

Thanks for getting this going, I am more than happy to do some training for the local departments if they are interested, and it helps you get support for the event.

What type of target and target stands will we need? Give me some ideas and lead-time so I can get the school carpentry and welding class working on it.

Would 2 or 3 sheets of 4’ x 8’ plywood in a target stand be large enough for a 1.5mile target?

Is one target stand per location enough?

How far apart geographically should or could the locations be? How much hiking, walking and climbing to arrive at the location would be tolerated? I realize 7000’asl isn’t a lot of elevation for some, but I also don’t want anyone heaving up a lung or getting AMS.

Any input on rules?

Maybe something like the NTI (National Tactical Invitational).

The NTI's three rules: no stupid gunhandling, no boorish behavior, and no sniveling.

This site gets along with few rules, most of the guys that show will be invited, and I am well versed in their competence, or they would not get an invite. I think the no sniveling thing goes without saying..... Wink

The test will be quite simple and fair. You have a day to shoot and collect data on site.......Then........

1) You have to demostrate the ability to make a one shot kills at at extreme ranges on the very next day at the same exact location.

2) You must then demonstrate proficiency on multiple targets at various ranges with very limited time available.

3) You must then demonstrate the ability to shoot on inclination angles at multiple ranges.

I will post the invites here on this thread once we get the detail nailed down.

That'll work.

Any Friday through Sunday from June to September would work for me.

Any ideas on target requirements? Size, construction, number needed?

What kind of angles and horizontal distances were you thinking for the inclination shots?

An inclination angle greater than 20 degrees and 900 to 1200 yards would be great. If we can't get that, I will take the closest thing to it that is convenient.

I am leaning this way for targets and scoring:

Targets

We use at least one target of tactical and one of hunting significance at each range. Several targets are placed at each range, and the shooter must engage the largest target at a given range first. We will the mount the targets on large backers of 4x8 sheets of plywood painted white. For example, at 1.5 miles, we may have a target affixed to four sheets of plywood butted together to make an 8X16 ft. backer.

Scoring

We will measure to an eighth of an inch the distance from the center of the target to the center of the bullet hole for each shot taken. At the end of the match we will total up the the inches of dispersion to determine the winner. A bonus will be given for a killing shot at any target. For any shot that misses the backer and can not be measured, a penalty will be given as a distance twice the measure of the target center to the backer edge. This way, the quality of every shot counts, and direct hits have a significant reward. Big misses have a severe penalty.

Why not start posting ideas for targets, like

Generators, mobile missle launchers, tank optics, truck grill, stuff like that?

I was planning on using my GPS to measure, as best I can, the horizontal distance and a protractor to measure, as best I can, the angle. Is there a better way with the equipment I have?

Could I use the altimeter on the GPS to measure the vertical distance, GPS to measure the horizontal, and trig to figure out the angle?

Is 3/8” plywood thick enough or do we need 1/2"?

3/8 will be fine, but I will get out there a couple of days early with the 4wd 1ton, and purchase all of the backer supplies.

How many sheets of 3/8” OSB would you like on hand?

Any preference or ideas on target stands? The welding class here is pretty handy, I just need specs and lead-time.

I have access to plenty of butcher paper. Is there anything else that we will need?

THIS SOUNDS FUN!!
And almost close to home. LOL
Game targets, Mule deer, Elk, and Elephant!!
Hey Sam, I'll need some 253 PT's, and a handycap of some kind!! Seriously what bullet combo is most likely to make 1.5 mile's in the 30 Wolf?

Strow,
Lots of good welders come out of the four corners area. I could help some with the target stands also if needed.
What have you found for places to shoot?

I've got a busy year planned, but would like to come if invited and timing works out!

Cam, we have some fairly artistic students here. If this looks like a “GO” then I will see if we can’t get some artwork for the targets done up.

If it wasn’t for the automotive, welding, and carpentry class I would be sunk. I couldn’t run the miles I do on the trapline if it wasn’t for them. They keep me up and running. Awesome kids!

I will keep everyone posted as we progress to let you know if and where I could use some help. I appreciate it!

Where in UT are you located?
