DPMS AP4 testing

We have a number of local shooters, L.E. and others that have acquired AP4's in the past few weeks. They will all probably have different sights on them and be in different configurations. Perhaps we should all meet at BRC and do a test and comparison of the varied configurations? Shoot them all at 600 yards, 300 yards, and at CQB distances comparing speed and accuracy....What say y'all?

I have a 1x4 NXS on order, Brian said it would ship in a couple of weeks. Post777 is trying to talk me out of it so he can mount it on his AP4, and I will just have to tell him to 'Order His OWN!'. Big Grin

I'm in. I have a feeling my 14x Leupold will EXCEL in the CQB division.

A skilled point shooter such as yourself should have no problems with the CQB phase.... Wink

Got a chance Monday to shoot the AP4 after training. We used it for penetration tests earlier in the day and it was dirty with about 25 rounds through it when I shot this 3 shot group with the 110 Vmax and 49.2 grains of Benchmark Powder using a 1x4 NXS set on 4 power.

Did I mention I really like this rifle? Big Grin

Got to shoot the AP4 again, this time with a 10 power NXS Compact and an R2 reticle. 110 Vmax with benchmark powder at about 3040 fps. The smallest 3 shot group was a shade under .400" in some pretty nasty wind conditions. Did get a couple of bullets in the same hole at 200 yards later in the day. What was really cool was the vertical control at multiple yardages with the R2. I don't think much more than a bullet diameter off at 100, 200 and 300 yards. About 1.4 inches low at 400 yards.

I was shooting with S1 for this testing. A couple of thoughts.

1) The DMPS AP4 is flat-out THE ticket. For the money, I'm not sure there's a better buy out there.
2) The NF 2.5-10 R2 with the 110 V-Max makes for a really simple system to drill targets from 20-400 yards.
3) The 110 VMax is out of gas past 400 yards. We were about 4 MOA up from 200 to 400 yds, but to get to 550 it took another 6 MOA.
4) The Magpul collapsable stock is MUCH nicer than the factory one.

Cheers,
nacroswnd

Those shots on target with the DPMS are very impressive but while I like DPMS and have a 5.56 lower of theirs I've been thinking about trying one of the Rock River .308 ARs. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they will be available until early 2007. Anyone know what the problems they seem to be having are? Also, the AP4 mentioned here certainly does better than 1.5 MOA which is the stated accuracy of the Rock River. What is DPMS doing to achieve the sub MOA groups in that rifle or was there an after market tweak?
One last question, the VMax bullets are great and the 110 is a nice weight for CQB but have we considered the Sierra 125 grain?

If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

"What is DPMS doing to achieve the sub MOA groups in that rifle or was there an after market tweak?"

Building a decent rifle, having me tune a load and shoot it on a calm day with good bullets, powder, and an NXS on top. This one was box stock when I shot that group with it."

"have we considered the Sierra 125 grain?"

Never tested those bullets. Shot many deer with a 125 Nosler Ballistic Tips, all one shot kills past 200 and less than 500 yards. My favorite deer load for the 24" barreled SR-25 for short range (500 and closer) is 51.2 grains of Varget behind a 125 Nosler BT.

Why wait for a Rock River?

The other thing to keep in mind is cost I don't know what RR will be charging but the DPMS is one of the best values going right now. My AP-4 looks alot like S-1s without most of the extra crap hanging on it. (i'm more old school) They shoot so well I haven't broke my down for any upgrades yet.

A magpul stock is waiting to go on it and I think a better muzzle break and barrel crown will be on the way soon. It shoots great and rides well in my squad car. what else could you want?

It's (the AP4) is certainly in the running to get my money, just considering all options. I would like to have a varmint sstyle (stainless, fluted) barrel but I have yet to find a short one (16"). I going to the Tulsa gun show this month (October), maybe I'll see something down there.

Based on our testing 2 months ago, the AP4 in 308 makes one nasty CQB rifle. Never seen lime sized chunks of flesh fly off something at the same time before. 110 vmax is accurate as well.
