Currently shooting a 30 8mm remmington mag. Looking for bullet recommendations for hunting deer and antelope out to 850 yds. (max distance I have targets set out for at this time.) Have shot 178 amax, 190 smk and 210 JLK so far. All shoot better than I can at this point. (.6 to .75 moa to 850 yds.) Which of these would you recommend or other suggestions?

thanks Neal

Howdy Neal,

I am very impressed with these 216 grain Clinch River Bullets. They are very uniform in the meplat area, and the accuracy is phenominal.

The hollowpoint is larger than the JLK, which should help it perform on game at longer range and slower impact velocity. It probably has the downside of reducing the B.C. slightly. A tradeoff I would gladly make when hunting at altitude.

Mt Rancher What powders are you finding work the best? Ive got a 30 jarret that is almost the same thing, currently H1000 seems to work the best in my gun. Have also tried wc872 i think down here in fl it is just too temp sensitive. Just lookin for a few ideas. 220 smks seem to shoot the best in the bullet dept. ebb

ebb,

I've had good results with H4831sc and the 178 amax. H1000 has worked best with the 190 SMK and 210 JLK. Just bumped into a guy yesterday who is shooting the 216 Clinch River bullet in a 300 Jarrett and has had real good results using RE25 . I've never tried RE25 in my gun as H1000 is working well enough, but just thought I would pass it along. He said 77 to 78 grains of Re 25 shot best in his 26 inch tube. It wasn't max in his rifle but grouped at 1000 yds best. If you have some loads you wouldn't mind sharing, I would be interested.

Thanks Neal

S1 thanks for the bullet suggestion. I appreciate all the information you have on your site. I think it's great!

My friend sold me the gun a couple of years ago, i played around with a sightron scope and almost drove my self crazy. put a B@L on and started shootin but 872 dont seem to work. He loaded me some different loads to try and the best was 79 grns h1000 220smk. He uses rl25 in a 30-338lm and swears by it, ive never tried the rl25. Have you tried retumbo, it works good in my 300ultra but havent tried in the jarret yet.Ill see if i can get some of his loads for you, if i forget email and remind me. ebb

I like RL-25 a lot in cool weather ( not hot, not cold) It works great in the Wolf with bullets from 150 to 190 grains, great velocity and accuracy. 178 A-Max and 93.7 grains of RL-25 has shot quite a few groups under an inch and a half at 600 yards out of my Winchester.

Above 190 grains, I would have to give Retumbo the nod for 1 shot kills at long range.

Just an update for any interested. Tried the 216 gr CR this summer and fall per S1 recommendation. Much more uniform meplat and OAL measurements than Sierra MK. Group size shrunk slightly out to 800 yards, but best part was my occasional "flyer" seems to have disappeared!! Gave me alot more confidence to try them out this fall on more than just coyotes. Finished off a badly hit muley at 490 yds for a friend, and killed a speedgoat at 642 yds. Longest big game kill to date. Internal damage was significant on both animals with fist sized exit wounds. I now understand S1's previous posts about perminant vs. temporary wound channels much better. Neither animal took another step after being hit. They just fell over.

Thanks again S1 for the great recommendation.

Neal Smile
