1200 yds with a 308?

Have a chance to shoot some long range stuff here in Montana at ranges out to 1200yards(steel plates and such). Is it possible to do it with a 308? It's the only stick I currently have available ( besides a 14 twist 22-250).
Just seeing if it would work. 26" 10 twist bbl and 5500 feet elevation is what I have to work with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Neal

I know some guys that have said 155 gr AMAX make it to 1400 yards with 1 minute of bush accuracy. JB1000BR has shot to a mile with a 308 and hit his target. So yes bullets will make it there; therefore, it is possible.

It is certainly possible, and at that altitude, it is probable. The 155 scenar with a hot load of Rel 15, and a 185 Berger VLD with a very compressed load of H-4350 will probably get you there as well. You will need lots of cant in your base, but none in your mind. Lots of adjustment on the scope will come in handy.

What velocity range can I expect with the berger 185 gr bullets? Assuming 49 grains of H4350 in win cases. I'm currently zeroed at 300 yards with 155gr amax bullets and have 48 moa of available up travel left and I could use the five mil dots in the scope if needed.

Thanks for the help!!

Neal,

You should be able to get between 2700 and 2800 fps. depending on barrel length. I would use Winchester cases because of the larger internal volume.

If your velocity is around 2760 fps. and you are zeroed at 200 yards with the 185 VLD, you will need about 37 MOA up to reach 1200 yards at an elevation of 4600 ft. with around 40 percent humidity @ std. pressure @ 59 degrees.

Not exactly the conditions you described, but close enough, and done in the real world, so it should get you into the ballpark.

Don't be afraid to compress the load with the H4350, it likes it, and so will you. Cool

Finally got a chance to pull the trigger again. Been really windy lately when I have time off. This morning was calm, 13 degrees, and sunny. Loaded up 51 gr H4350, fed 210, winchester brass and the 185gr Berger. Pretty impressive stuff!! Five rounds went under 2.5 inches at 425 yards. Not bad for shooting off the picnic table in the back yard. I think I may have found my 1000 yard plus load.

Thanks

Neal

Cool stuff, eager to hear your opinion of that load and the wind deflection at 1000 yards!
