I'm having my re-chambered 7mm STW re-barreled. What's the best twist for 160 gr. bullets going 3160fps?? Does anyone have other info for this cartidge besides re-barreling?? Thank, Steve
Welcome to the forum Steve. 1 in 8 twist is usually best for the Ultra long VLD's. For shorter bullets and/or with less agressive ogives, a 1 in 9 or 1 in 10 will work very well. It would help to know the exact bullet you intend to shoot.
Thanks S1, I respect what ever you have to say on here as I've seen some of your other posts. This is really a hunting gun, but I want the most accurate hunting gun I can afford and carry. Right now the best hunting bullets I've found are the Nosler Accubonds. There are a few similar, but these seem to be the most accurate. I like the 160 grain bullets for this gun as they are plenty fast and probably buck the wind better than the lighter ones. I plan on putting a 26" barrel on it, right now it's a 24" 18 year old factory barrel. I believe it's a 1 in 9.5 twist from the factory. Please forgive my ignorance, but can you explain to me why you'd go with a 1 in 8 twist??? With the longer barrel these bullets should be going over 3200fps. Going hunting til Thursday. Please tell me what you know about the 7mm STW.Thanks again, Steve
I know Len Backus on LongRangehunting.com has shot one for a few years. I also know that I do not want to headspace off a magnum belt if I am looking for accuracy, and the quality of brass is no where near what is available from a beltless Lapua case. I think that there are bullets out there that might be better suited to long range stuff, and they will shoot better with the faster twist. I have seen Accubonds shoot well with some lots, and other barely mediocre, depending on what lot you get.
